A Choice in Life is a story about a young girl living in the country with her mother and step-father. Ruby's step-father left the home and family behind while Ruby's mother was left to raise five children on $2.50 weekly salary along with cold bread from the white folk's table.

Ruby's mother died when Ruby was only 13 years old, so the time had come for her to raise herself while working for food and putting herself through school.

But Ruby had a choice.

Ruby stated, "There was a constant struggle against poverty and racism, but I had a choice."
